Title

The Dukes Theatre

Description

The Dukes Theatre is based in the heart of Lancaster. Since 1987, the company have performed in Williamson Park each summer. They were the first theatre in the UK to produce a “walkabout” brand of theatre and were met with great success, especially for their 2018 production of The Hobbit. The term “walkabout” refers to the almost immersive experience of the audience walking through the park to watch scenes in different locations. In the diverse landscape of Williamson Park, the scene can change from a lake, to the forest or even be shadowed by the grand 150ft Ashton Memorial.

Many fans were left disappointed when the Dukes decided to take a break to focus on fundraising for technical equipment in 2019 and return in 2020. Their new production of Alice in Wonderland, now postponed to 2021, is therefore highly anticipated. The cast for the company's productions is usually made up of veteran actors from the theatre’s in-house productions and members of a community company. Rehearsals begin indoors and then progress to the park as the actors need to become more familiar with their environment and the geography of the scenes. Each production typically runs from July- August, making use of the favourable weather conditions in the summer and is a firm staple in local calendars.
